The Heart of Cappadocia: Nevşehir Castle

One of the highest points of the city, Nevşehir Castle has an important position. It can be said that it is one of the largest slope places in the world. Although it is not known in which period it was built, rubble and cut stones were used in its construction.

The castle has become one of the symbols of the city. Being located at the highest point of the city, it has a magnificent city view. The castle, which was built with very strong materials, was repaired during the Ottoman period. Its walls are still standing. The castle has 4 towers and two entrance gates.

It is estimated that the castle was built to protect the caravan route during the period it was built. However, we do not know exactly when it was built. Some sources even suggest that it was used as a secret tunnel to overcome the water shortage during sieges.

The castle and the surrounding areas have been declared as a third-degree archaeological site. As a result of excavations carried out in the region, many frescoes and underground cities have been found.
